Syntax-like Structures in Maternal Contact Calls of Chestnut-Crowned Babblers (Pomatostomus ruficeps)

چکیده

Abstract The combination of meaning-bearing units (e.g., words ) into higher-order structures compound and phrases) is integral to human language. Despite this central role syntax in language, little known about its evolutionary progression. Comparative data using animal communication systems offer potential insights, but only a handful species have been identified combine meaningful calls together larger signals. We investigated candidate for syntax-like structure the highly social chestnut-crowned babbler ( Pomatostomus ruficeps ). Using behavioral observations, acoustic analyses, playback experiments, we test whether form function maternal contact modified by combining core “piping” elements such with at least one other call element or call. Results from analyses (236 analysed 10 individuals) suggested that piping can be flexibly initiated either “peow ” middle-distance adult “begging” “peow-pipe” “beg-pipe” calls. Behavioral responses playbacks (20 trials 7 groups) natural peow-pipe beg-pipe were comparable those artificially generated versions each peow begging contexts. Furthermore, (34 three forms (piping alone, peow-pipe, beg-pipe) differed. Together these suggest meaning encoded used contexts so provide rare empirical evidence syntactic-like structuring nonhuman animal.

Comparative Methods at the Species Level: Geographic Variation in Morphology and Group Size in Grey-crowned Babblers (pomatostomus Temporalis).

We show that a new comparative method that sheds light on evolutionary trends among species may also illuminate trends within species. This finding comes from a phylogenetic autocorrelation analysis of morphological traits among individuals sampled from ten populations of a cooperatively breeding songbird, the Grey-crowned Babbler (Pomatostomus temporalis). Highly variable mitochondrial DNA (mt...

Advancing breeding phenology does not affect incubation schedules in chestnut‐crowned babblers: Opposing effects of temperature and wind

Projecting population responses to climate change requires an understanding of climatic impacts on key components of reproduction. Here, we investigate the associations among breeding phenology, climate and incubation schedules in the chestnut-crowned babbler (Pomatostomus ruficeps), a 50 g passerine with female-only, intermittent incubation that typically breeds from late winter (July) to earl...

Demographic Effects of Habitat Restoration for the Grey-Crowned Babbler Pomatostomus temporalis, in Victoria, Australia

BACKGROUND Considerable resources are spent on habitat restoration across the globe to counter the impacts of habitat loss and degradation on wildlife populations. But, because of time and resourcing constraints on many conservation programs, the effectiveness of these habitat restoration programs in achieving their long-term goals of improving the population viability of particular wildlife sp...

Experimental Evidence for Phonemic Contrasts in a Nonhuman Vocal System

The ability to generate new meaning by rearranging combinations of meaningless sounds is a fundamental component of language. Although animal vocalizations often comprise combinations of meaningless acoustic elements, evidence that rearranging such combinations generates functionally distinct meaning is lacking. Here, we provide evidence for this basic ability in calls of the chestnut-crowned b...

Individuality of contact calls in the Greater

Acoustic communication has great importance in social relationships and especially in individual recognition in the Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterws ruber However, it is constrained by the noisy environment of the colony. I performed an analysis of both the temporal and frequency patterns of contact calls and showed that the use of both is essential for discrimination between individuals. I made...
